ISSUE 29
Japan and Back
Konnichiwa!
I am writing this having just gotten back from Japan with jet lag and no food in the fridge, but alas, the marketing must go on. The trip was great! Though I wouldn’t recommend traveling with two kids and 10 bags, for anyone who has spent any time in Japan though, you know it is an incredibly beautiful country with incredibly kind people and Rita’s family is no exception. So I am feeling inspired even though my body is exhausted. Plus, we had some amazing food with tons of laughs. And sake. Lots and lots of sake.
Now I am looking forward to getting back into a routine and making art again. What was I doing again? Oh yeah, this.
New Perish Pages
The book production is coming along nicely, although I seem to be struggling a bit with the cover. I made a cover but am now thinking it could be better. Covers are hard since they have to capture someone’s attention at a glance, represent the story in some way, and include some interesting typography, all very hard to do. I know I will get there, it just takes time.
Here are the next handful of pages. The first few pages were mostly scene-setting, but here we finally get some story and character information. I am still working out the text so please ignore any spelling mistakes. Check it out.
Japan Book Haul
I already miss taking long walks through the cherry blossom trails to used bookshops to peruse endless stacks of manga. Japan is the best for a book junkie such as myself. I think I was pretending to be my new favorite thing, Japan Book Hunter. I tried to be very selective in what I purchased because we were limited on suitcase space, but these were the books I couldn’t pass up. Some of these were on the pricier side, while others were rare and under $10. It is crazy what you can find.
Here is my haul from the last 10 days.
I was thinking of showing some of my favorite images from one of the books above in the next newsletter. What do you think?
If you want to dive into any of the other books, just let me know. I could only pick five options for this poll for some reason.
GUNK Club Giveaway
The winner of this month’s GUNK Comics Club giveaway is:
Matt Leano
Congrats, Matt. You will be receiving this commission production sketch. If this is the Matt Leano I am thinking of, he has been a supporter of my work for a couple of years now. Thanks so much for being a part of GUNK Club and for being such a swell dude. I will reach out to organize the details.
Quick heads up on a book deal. After WonderCon this year, I realized my older oversized books don’t quite match my current style and take up a lot of table space, so I’m bundling Red Flag and Orbiter for $20 to try and move some inventory.
That’s it. Thank you all for reading, More next month!
Until then,
Curt
