ISSUE 30
New Perish Pages, Paintings and Monsterpalooza
If you haven’t read part 1 and part 2 Of Perish so far, here is a short synopsis.
Gaia, a soldier who is dying, finds his way to the Bishop’s temple, where he is told he could be healed of the thorn plague he suffers from. Inside the massive chambers, he finds only a sleeping Bishop and his servant, Lady Grin.
After passing out from pain, Gaia awakens to find himself chained to the temple altar.
Now, the turn.
I’m still a bit stalled on the cover after taking a break for Japan and jumping into some commercial work when I got back. But I’m hopeful I can finally finish this thing in June. Fingers crossed.
If you’d like to be notified when the Kickstarter launches, I did set up a pre launch page. If it’s not too annoying, please click the “Notify Me” button. I think it helps the launch quite a bit. Much appreciated my friends.
Art Auction
A couple weekends ago, a great guy I met at Wondercon named David held an art auction on his Instagram and included some of my work in the lineup. I was lucky enough to have a couple pieces sell.
Both paintings were created a few years ago while I was studying the female figure and exploring how to apply it to horror imagery. It’s always a little sad seeing pieces like this leave the house, but I’m thrilled they both found new homes.
Big thanks to David and to the fine folks who picked them up.
Japan Book images
As promised, here are some of my favorite panels from the book most of you picked in last month’s poll. The winner was SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers, a somewhat rare Katsuhiro Otomo book I picked up in Japan. The most interesting part about this is that it is a collection of Otomo’s early shorts. You can see the seeds to what becomes his more known masterpieces later. Sorry for the bad photos but this was the best I could do.

Studio Notes
I am trying something new which is this Studio Notes section. This is where I will put any news or links to things I find interesting or notable. Like…
I will be at Monsterpalooza In Pasadena from May 29th - 31st. First time doing this show but I am hopeful it will be good. Please come by booth BRIDE 195 and say hi if you are there.
Gunk Comics Club members this month got a peek into my notebook keeping practices. If you are interested in diving deeper into my process, seeing exclusive art or just want to support my work deeper please consider becoming a member.
I have been playing Muzik for Insomniaks Volume 1 in my studio lately. This album was created by one of the musicians from Devo. Which I later found out inspired the music for the cartoon Rugrats. it sounds like a 90s video game.
I recently read this comic I got from my Wondercon neighbor and friend Ryan Barry that totally blew my mind. The art and story are incredible. It’s called Go Back and it rules. Also, Tartarus rules too.
I’ve been thinking about phasing out the Pinprick drawings I do at the beginning of these newsletters. I originally started them as a way to learn cartooning and dip pens, and now both of those things have become regular parts of my work. At the moment, the Pinprick style no longer feels as natural to me as it once did. I’m sure I’ll return to autobiographical cartooning someday when I have more time, but for now I feel the need to simplify my commitments. So unless there is a massive public outcry, goodbye Pinprick, we’ll meet again someday.
That’s it for now. Thank you all for reading. More next month, my friends!
Until then,
Curt
